Periodically, I got for a walk and something becomes clear to me while I am alone with the dogs. This is why making space in your life to wander is so important! Often the thoughts I have something to do with freedom, society or a bigger picture - but not today. This one is about human nature and the concept of “can’t”

Main topic of the Show: Thought of the Walk on Can’t

You know what I mean, right?

  • I can’t pay off my debt because my wife spends too much month
  • I can’t fold my laundry because I don’t have time
  • I can’t start my business because I haven’t built the website
  • I can’t lose weight because my job keeps me on the road without a kitchen

We are officially in fall. Another year has almost passed with its hope for a great harvest in the spring, wicked hot late summer days, and now, fall. So today, I wanted to share with you my early fall checklist on the homestead.

#HollerHatWednesday: Where is she and who is she with?

Listener Feedback from Jennifer

What’s Up in the Garden

  • We had a terrible infestation of cabbage worms (what we did about it)
  • Fall lettuce is trying to bolt - will have a shade strategy in place for next year

Main topic of the Show: An Early Fall Checklist

Gardens

  • Gather the antifreezing materials: plastic and bricks
    • Stock tank heater
    • Outside sheets
  • Prepare the garlic bed
  • Plant fall bulbs (tulips and daffodils, here we come!)
  • Begin to mulch areas that are already done for the year (asparagus)
  • Trim the eldreberries and mulberries (they are already dropping their leaves)
  • Plan for any new fruit tree plantings

Animals

  • Updated food storage: more
  • Ensure we have enough hay for the winter
  • Test the water antifreezing systems
  • Look at shelter and evaluate for winter
  • Bedding
  • Outdoor shelter for dogs and cats

Humans

  • Prepare for the fall root cellar move
  • Review the freezer contents and look for food storage weaknesses
  • Finish the rocket mass heater
  • Review pipe anti-freezing technology
  • Start winterizing the yard things
  • Look the cars over for decent antifreeze, etc
  • Power outtage kit review
  • First aid/medicinal support review (flu, colds)
  • Firewood
  • Clean the chimney
  • Order the broken stove baffle (OMG)
  • Holiday travel and guest plans
  • Review winter clothing status

Really the only thing on this list that does not apply to a city fall check list would be the livestock list and if you have pets, it might well. I am often struck by how the lessons in developing my lifestyle freedom on a homestead apply to most other ways of living that a person might choose.

Make it a great week!

It is Friday so we have an interview show and today, I talk with Daniel Allen about aircrete - an interesting, insulative and very flexible building material that you may want to consider for your next project.

Bio: Daniel Allen

30 years in the building Industry I took a job in I.T. and the company lost its big client to an Exxon buy out. The great recession hit and I could not find work without moving. So I cashed out my retirement, bought some land, build a small house and lived for a few years growing all my own food taking odd jobs.

I started building alternative buildings and had the opportunity to build every type of alternative structure. Eventually I found AirCrete, or cellular cement as it's know in the industry. I fell in love with it.

AirCrete let's a comfortable structure be build in any climate affordably with the enormous amounts of labors required by typical alternative construction or expensive machines. Throw some tools and cement in a truck and one person can build anywhere they can drive to.

Now, I am starting a web based business teaching people how to build cheap beautiful debt free homes so that they can live an intentional life with or without a typical job. I offer digital video courses as well as workshops.

Richard Hastings turned me onto your podcast. I did a podcast interview with the survival podcast and really licked the interaction.

Today, we will discuss three value-adding ideas for your garlic crop. Why? Because in just 3 weeks or so, it is time to plant garlic here and if you decide to sell garlic products, you may want to plant more than you did last year.

Today I have something that is near and dear to my heart: I have been seeking something to support to help combat veterans who come home carrying a heavy burden. And this weekend, I had a great interview with Kurt Dugger of Freedom And Photography and Gretchen Catherwood of the Dark Horse Lodge. Kurt will embark on a  journey across the state of Tennessee in a paramotor to raise awareness of the high suicide rate among combat veterans - and to help raise money for the Dark Horse Lodge. This interview is well worth a listen.

Remember the one thing that I always say about moving to a homestead? LEARN TO MAINTAIN YOUR WELL or PUMPHOUSE. Well this week, the holler homestead pump house was completely re-plumbed. I have patched and patched the thing for 13 years and since we already had redone all the house plumbing, Tactical decided to apply pressure until I let him redo the pump house completely. So I did. With one caveat. I needed to understand everything he did and why so that this winter, if something breaks, I can fix it.
