He also tends a 3/4 acre plot of which 4000 square feet is planted in a combination of berries and food forest along with bigger patches of squash and potatoes. 3 greenhouse structures, one of which is currently uncovered, handle tomatoes, cucumber, ganga, and various other edibles and medicinal.

Every time there is an incident that causes death, whether it be a hurricane, earthquake or tornado – or something else, people say things like:

“I could never live there.”

Or they ask: “How can you live in tornado alley?”

Today, we will talk about what it is like to live in a tornado prone area, what we do to prepare for them, and why we stay.

Weekly Shopping Report from Joe

03/27/2023

Saturday's trip included a couple of extra stops as well. Dollar Tree was first. We've been buying single-use applications of superglue there, which has avoided a lot of waste. The coolers were all in good shape; all pretty much full less typical usage. Other shelves were also well-stocked. For those interested, they now have seed packages.

Our second stop was a little ethnic Mexican store we visit from time to time for things Sonia particularly likes, such as plantains and a vanilla flavoring she adds to her coffee. I like their small bags of pasta noodles. Here, we paid the price for a late start to our day, as it was lunchtime and the store was packed. Their shelves are always full.

Next was Hobby Lobby. They were busy as well. Sonia only wanted a couple of mixed media pads, so it was a quick in and out, but I didn't see any empty areas.

Home Depot was next. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.35. They looked busy as well. If I had to guess, people are ramping up their gardening.

Aldi was lastWe found heavy cream this week. I definitely noticed higher prices. The meal replacement shakes I get are at least $2 higher.

I stopped in Food City. There is still very little choice in larger bags of dry cat food; I saw mostly generic that I wouldn't feed a dog. There are a lot of recipes online for mug cakes, but we like the simplest, which is to combine one box of angel-food cake mix plus one box of any other kind; no oil needed. They'd had little angel-food cake on recent trips, but today they had multiple boxes of two different brands.

Untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.999/gallon.

Main topic of the Show: How Can You Live in Tornado Country

Weather this weekend - What living in tornado land is like

>Situational awareness, getting information

>Jokes vs taking responsibility for your welfare

>Zello, FB, TG Communications Throughout the State

>Weather Radio

Preparing

  • Avoidance is the number one goal (mountain views, building quality, driving in it, leaving an area, staying in an area)
  • Likelihood
  • What happens when a bad set comes through:
    • Power Loss
    • Road closures
    • Need for assistance
    • Water system failures
    • Communications knocked out
  • Be ready to: Take care of yourself and your community, render aid to those nearby, provide temporary shelter, go help if you can (Share photos/video as an emotional processing thing)

Why do we stay?

  • Odds of being killed in a tornado are relatively low and other locations have different things that are risks. Floods for example.
  • It is beautiful here
  • People become nonchalant about risks with more time spent near a danger
  • Where else would we go? We accept the risk, take what steps we can, and go on

How about you? Would you stay somewhere where tornadoes happen?

Make it a great week!

Frugality Tip: Ross or Homegoods

Do you have a Ross near you? Is there one on your travels? Stop in. Things like sneakers on clearance are great buys, camp chairs are half of Walmart prices, name brand garden tools are crazy cheap. My little secret is to check out the food section where I buy pink Himalayan salt for $4.99 for a 5# bag (they usually have rock and fine ground). You can get some really good buys in the spice section.

Happy hunting y'all, Make it a great week.

Weekly Shopping Report from Joe

First stop was Dollar Tree. Stock in the frozen food coolers has notably increased; they're probably at least half full, with a decent variety. The drink aisle and coolers also were a lot more full, with good variety. There were more vitamins in the health area too.

Home Depot was next. Sonia stayed in the car, so I just ran in and out. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.35. I also picked up a long Diablo reciprocating saw blade for use on some saplings in the yard.

Aldi was third. I thought the shelves looked more stuffed than usual; there was plenty of product. We found everything we wanted. Eggs have come down, perhaps to $2.7x? We also found heavy cream, and there were multiple boxes of it. We got a case of their canned cat food, leaving at least two more.

Weigel's was last. My usual station is running on a backup pump, and the flow rate is so low that I aborted a fillup on Thursday evening after just five gallons. The other station is running just fine. The price is the same, with a gallon of untainted regular still $3.999.

Frugality Tip

Home repairs can be overwhelming. Some times you need to "hire a guy". You have to be ok with knowing your limits.  I know I can't (yet) do framing and stucco, but I can paint. I saved us $300 by buying a gallon of stucco waterproofing and a gallon of paint. It will take me longer than if I paid a guy, but any time I can shave a few bucks off a project I will.

P.S. I watched the stuccoing process, and feel pretty confident that I can do a small project or repair next time.

Main topic of the Show: Crisis Communications

What is crisis communications

Why did I think of it? (Dentist)

What should you do if you find yourself in a tense situation? (Photoshopped head on a campaign photo, Al Gore)

  • Acknowledge that providing facts as soon as possible is key and communicate that you are gathering facts so that you can explain the situation
  • Do NOT make up answers to anything. Not ever. Not even if you think you know
  • Clarify who is qualified to speak on this matter (Is it you, someone in your organization or family, etc). Ensure everyone KNOWS who to send inquiries to
  • Release the facts to the media, on your communications platforms etc. (Media statement vs press release)
  • Never repeat the accusation - we do not need out of context audio clips of you saying you did something that you did not say
  • Handle interview requests as you usually should, by first researching the media outlet before agreeing to an interview
  • Schedule down time
  • Rely on the facts in every communication and get good at being called a liar, a poopy head, etc
  • Set a communications schedule moving through the crisis and STICK to it

Why should this matter to a homesteader? (Pig picture)

What about the people who lie all the time? They don’t rely on facts

Frugality Tip from Margo

Different stores have different prices and I make a separate grocery list for a couple of stores. Things like eggs, produce, and baking supplies all come from Aldi. If I'm running into the grocery store that is closer to home, I also make it a point to check out their BOGO section, you can save a few bucks right there.  Make a list of the things you buy often and check the prices at different stores, you would be shocked at some of the differences.

I use a specific coffee creamer that they have the grocery store, but Walmart has it for $1.50 less, so I'll grab a couple when I'm there.

Operation Independence

  • Selling a ram alive vs in packages
  • Headed to Next-steps.info – you can still get tickets!

Main topic of the Show: Imposter’s Complex

This was inspired by a talk with Amy Dingmann over at a Farmish Kind of LIfe

I have been reading a book called Dotcom Secrets by Russle Brunson -it was recommended by John Bush

  • John’s selling and email system vs what we do here
  • Keeping an open mind

People getting mad about me making money, or not wanting to know when things are for sale.

Decision: The few who are mad at me for selling things don’t really support me so I need to be ok with leaving them behind

  • Current email list will have no changes
  • News lists will happen over time

>>>What has happened with training webinars over the past two years - we do them better and why<<<

The Big Decision: If I invest more in training, there are better results for the people I want to help  - a win/win

Which brings me to imposter’s complex: Did a live Radio Show Last night and the feedback was that Tim and I were inspiring.

We had no idea what we were doing!

Enter Imposter’s Complex.

Concept: you just need to be a chapter or two ahead of the people you are helping to be able to teach them and do NOT need to be an “expert”. To them you are an expert. In fact you probably teach it bette than someone who is miles ahead.

Ways I have used this:

  • Going on autopilot - and getting out of it
  • Writing Marketing Copy – fake it til you make it
  • Launching the podcast
  • Being “OK” with losing listeners because I sell things, have sponsors, etc (It hurts but wont in the long run)
  • Reminding myself to be disciplined with #my3things (Free webinar)

When you get up and post something like: Going for a daily walk can change your life, and you realize you only went on three last week, are you an imposter? Or are in the fake it til you make it time?

Feeling Imposter’s complex is normal. Not moving forward because of it though, that is a huge mistake/

Make it a great week!

Weekly Shopping Report: 02/11/2023

Dollar Tree was first. I'm beginning to see some thinning in the main food aisle, although there are more products in the drink aisle, and the drink coolers are a little better stocked than last week. The frozen-food coolers in the back remain mostly empty. The store was pretty busy today, with two cashiers open, both with lines.

Next was Home Depot. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.35. They were rather busy around the contractor entrance, but I did not look around the rest of the store, as Sonia was waiting outside while I checked.

Our final stop was Aldi. We found what we wanted. There were at least two cases of heavy cream. I noticed that flour had gone up, and is now $2.18. Our careful buying habits caught up to us this week in a good way, and we escaped the store for less than $50.

Untainted regular at $3.999/gallon. Sonia commented that she saw more people with fuller carts.

Main topic of the Show: Choose Your Focus with #My3Things

Let’s review what we have already done:

  1. Defined your Vision
    https://www.livingfreeintennessee.com/2023/01/02/establishing-your-vision-my3things-step-one/

  2. Defined you Purpose
    https://www.livingfreeintennessee.com/2023/01/30/develop-your-purpose-with-my3things/

  3. Updated and adjusted both with feedback

Today, we use the SWOT method to prioritize three areas of focus.

What is SWOT?

Internal:

Strengths

  • What are you good at?

  • What do you have of value in your household?

  • What would your mom say are your best talents?

Weaknesses

  • What are you bad at?

  • What are your weaknesses?

  • Where are you vulnerable if things go wrong (like a job loss, etc)

  • What limitations do you have?

External

Opportunities

  • What trends do you see in the big wide world that can create opportunity?

  • What external factors provide opportunities for you/your family?

Threats

  • What trends in the big wide world do you see that are threats?

  • What external factors limit your opportunities?

Choosing 3 priorities -

  • Clump and Bump

  • Finding Connections

  • Identifying 3 in each category

  • Reduce to three total areas to address with goals

Creating goals from your SWOT

BHAG - bigger picture - timeline 3-5 years or even evergreen

Example: Create enough local, ongoing revenue that we are able to support the vision of the Holler Homestead.

Annual SMART goals: LFTN Podcast Monetization

  • Book 6 paid speaking engagements in 2023 in networks that are new to LFTN resulting in 150 leads each entering our sales funnel for the podcast.

    • Specific: increase funnel entrants

    • Measurable: by 900

    • Achievable: <yes)

    • Relevant: when more people join our network, their lives improve and our revenue improves

    • Time constrained: 2023

  • Create a sales funnel by Feb 26, 2023 that guides participants through the process of developing a life strategic plan, and nets $5 per lead generated for LFTN.
