TORNADO UPDATE

Tales from the Prepper Pantry

  • We fit 2.5 cows in the freezer by playing freezer tetris - yolink
  • Pulled a PILE OF MEAT OUT for this week to stay on plan despite the ongoing construction chaos
  • Crockpot roast: onion, garlic, cumin, 1 jar tomato sauce, salt and pepper. Add carrots 4 hours before finish or if you fumble that ball, precook them and add them in

Weekly Shopping Report

12/11/2023

We took our usual trip on Saturday. It was a rather gloomy day, but not truly yucky, and we stayed dry. Traffic was light.
Dollar Tree was first. The coolers (food and drink) are all in decent shape, as though perhaps an effort is being made. The store has become a LOT busier over the past few weeks, and three cashiers were open. Amidst the junk, there are some good finds here. Feel free to listen to Jinne on her "Homestead Corner" YouTube channel; she often does budget Dollar Tree prepper hauls.
Home Depot was second. FYI, they will shake your own paint cans for you, and I don't think there's a charge. The tag was missing in the store, but looking online it looks like a 2x4x8 has gone up 7 cents to $3.25.
Aldi was last. We found everything we wanted, but the chocolate is dwindling again. We got the last small piece of Atlantic Salmon, but the cashier said they were expecting a truck. There were some price adjustments. Staple prices were: milk: $3.02, eggs: $1.66, heavy cream: $4.69, OJ: $3.29, butter: $2.99 (-), bacon: $4.25, potatoes: $3.99 (+), sugar: $3.09, four: $1.99, 80% ground beef: $4.19.
A gallon of untainted regular gasoline is $3.699.
I made a quick second trip to Walgreen's on Sunday to restock vitamin C; somehow our last bottle was nearly empty. FYI, they typically have BOGO deals on vitamins and supplements, or buy one at full price, and the second is half price. The C was BOGO, so we now have a couple years' worth, for around $21. There were holes here and there for certain brands or sizes of various vitamins and supplements, but overall the selection looked complete.

Weekly Shopping Report

Black Friday deals going on.

Dollar Tree was first. Although we found parking easily enough, they were busy enough to have three lines open, which is rare, and I saw at least one person stocking shelves. One of the food coolers in the back appears to have croaked, as it was empty ("66" on its display), but all the others were 3/4 full. The drink coolers were in good shape too, except for one making a bad rattling noise intermittently as it tried to start.

Home Depot was next. Ryobi has a new line of USB-charged tools, and we picked up a rotating brush on the spur of the moment. The new batteries are NOT compatible with their old low-voltage ones. They have USB-C ports on them.

Aldi was last. We found everything we wanted. The only muzzle in sight the whole trip was the woman taking care of her mom with cancer, and she'd be wearing it without the scamdemic. Staple prices were: milk: $3.02, eggs: $1.24 (+), heavy cream: $4.69, OJ: $3.29, butter: $3.49 (+), potatoes: $3.49, bacon: $4.49, sugar: $3.09, flour: $1.99, 80% lean ground beef: $4.49.

A gallon of untainted gasoline remains at $3.899.

Frugality Tip from Margo

You can get yourself, or a friend, prepared for an upcoming surgery, life event, or just a day when you don't want to think about what's for dinner, by making up crockpot meals. Chop veggies, add seasonings and bag and freeze. Take the meat out the day before and add the frozen veggies with seasoning to the crockpot. I like to freeze bone broth in ice cube trays and throw a couple in the crockpot with a roast, stew meat or chicken, so add them to the bag of veggies for a quick and easy ready to go meal.  Saves you from ordering that take out, and saves you some time.

Operation Independence

Take advantage of cyber deals that are actual cyber deals - which requires pricing awareness. You can get $.99/lb turkey, 80% off at Wayfair, or other deals this week.

  3. Soup in a jar: Country Soup in a Jar
  4. Dried herbs in a jar
  5. Home canned goods basket
  6. Aprons and napkins

  8. Cookies, quickbreads, treats

  • “Shepherd’s Pie” and “Stroganoff” to use up winter squash
  • Hoping to find wild mushrooms this week
  • Basing meals on odds and ends

Weekly Shopping Report from Joe

We made our usual three stops today. Dollar Tree was first. Though there is still a good variety there, the plastics area is again beginning to be depleted. We wanted a new trashcan for the bathroom, and we may have gotten the last one of its type. The coolers remain in decent shape for quantity and variety, but they're still not putting any energy drinks in them. Oh well; in this weather, room temperature is okay. I saw the first cloth face-diaper I've seen in quite a while on a woman in here.

Home Depot was next, as I wanted a couple of things for a car toolbag. They have some "Black Friday" stuff out, so it might be worth a look. A 2x4x8 is still $3.18. They have good stocks of alkaline batteries, but still few lithium other than a normal amount of coin cells and CR123. I saw some deals on Ryobi and Milwaukee tool batteries as well.

Aldi was last. We found everything we wanted, including my preferred 70% chocolate. Staple prices were: eggs: $1.23 (decent increase; I hear the parasites have forced the slaughter of millions more birds); milk: $3.02; heavy cream: $4.69; OJ: $3.19; butter: $2.99; bacon: $4.49; potatoes: $3.49; flour: $1.99; sugar: $3.09; 80% lean ground beef: $4.19.

Untainted (i.e. no ethanol) regular gasoline remains at $3.899 per gallon.

Frugality Tip from Will

Last fall a friend of mine was processing turkeys for thanksgiving and she was overwhelmed and it was taking her far longer than expected. So she sent out a request for help. Having processed hundreds of birds I went over and helped get caught up. When we were done she asked "What do I owe you?" I pointed at her amazing garlic bed she has been growing for years and said a few of those. Well this fall I just planted bulbs I grew this year from that garlic. Not only did this help a fellow homesteader, but I now have a strain of garlic that I know grows here and it cost me nothing. As a bonus being 30 minutes apart if something ever happens to either of our garlic beds we can always help each other get restarted.

Weekly Shopping Report From Joe

I gassed up on Friday, and spent the usual $3.899 per gallon of untainted regular at Weigels.

Traffic was moderate, and the weather was nice.

All of the drink coolers are working at Dollar Tree, and they are well-stocked. The health aisle looks pretty full too, with a good supply of generic OTC meds.

A 2x4x8 remains at $3.68 in Home Depot. I'm not sure I saw any AA or AAA Lithium batteries, but they have plenty of alkaline, and they do have Lithium coin cells and CR123s. The store was normal-busy.

Aldi was last. We found what we wanted. They even had a little bit of 70% chocolate in stock again. Staple prices were: milk: $2.82, eggs: $1.03, heavy cream: $4.69, butter: $3.19, OJ: $3.19, bacon: $3.99, potatoes: $5.99, sugar: $3.09, flour: $2.19.

Frugality Tip from Janet - who just started a sewing podcast

This one can help keep things tidier in your bathroom too!

I save little slivers of soap in a jar in the bathroom. When I make a batch of homemade liquid hand soap with a bar of grated soap and a gallon of water, I add all the little slivers to the batch and use them up that way.

Main topic of the Show: How I Built a Rental Business with a $25,000/Year Job

It was the early 2,000s and I was living in an apartment with a roommate. I was in my late 20s and had rarely lived without roommates - that was how I made money work.

Background:

  • Grew up helping Dad with rental properties
  • Took jobs cleaning and painting in college because they were flexible
  • Was an excellent tenant
  • KNEW I wanted to eventually have rental properties

Learning the Trade: Befriended someone who managed several rentals and helped with property management.

  • Standardized agreements
  • Standardized paint colors
  • Standardized policies/template agreements
  • Garbage disposals, ceiling fans, and appliances
  • The “Move in fee’
  • Month to month versus leases
  • Screening services

Mentorship and My First Home

  • Qualified for $150k on my 25000/year salary with good credit
  • Could only really afford 100k when I looked an finances
  • At this time, houses in the “wrong” part of town fell into that category
  • How I got the first home
  • How I kept the first home (Roommates)
  • Remodeling myself

It was 2006 and the mortgage market was playing free and loose with loans – New state, Tennessee. I found myself becoming a landlord across the country.

Established a long term goal: ongoing revenue in old age, 10 units

  • Mid 30s and still had roommates
  • Went in on a duplex in Nashville with a 50-50 partner in an undervalued part of town. It needed work and updates.
    • Established a property manager I trusted (words on this)
    • Bad experiences happened when
      • I let folks in with former evictions
      • I let folks in with criminal history
      • I let folks in with bad credit
      • I did not check monthly
  • Bought the Holler and my former Nashville Home became a rental - the NEW DAWN
    • Standardized policies
    • No exceptions to screening rules
    • Hired a lawyer for rental agreements
    • Standardize paint colors, ceiling fan, garbage disposal, appliances policy
    • Immediate eviction notices for late rent
    • Philosophy: strict adherence to contracts from the start
  • Financial goal per property: Positive cash flow, not long term asset appreciation

Today, we rarely have issues and use time between tenancy to implement maintenance. The approach is that it is better to be empty a bit longer than to have a bad renter experience. There is still improvements to do on each property and we update things as extra budget happens.

Speaking of finances: for 20 years, most money from the rentals goes back into the rentals, which are nicer than my personal home. By choice. To build this long term into ongoing revenue for when it is harder for me to work.

Today I have 4 and if you think about it, by having Tactical in my guest house, I STILL live with a roommate. In my 50s. Because that is one of the BEST ways to quickly improve your financial situation quickly and leverage the money toward rental property acquisition.

Weekly Shopping Report from Joe

We took our usual trip on Saturday. Traffic was a lot heavier than it has been. People's generally pleasant moods were no different, there were just a lot more of them on the road.

Dollar Tree was first. There have been no significant changes. The one cooler still hasn't been fixed, but the others have plenty of stock in them. I didn't see any holes in aisles.

Home Depot was next. A 2x4x8 remains at $3.68. We were able to get two big bags of the detergent Sonia likes; each is good for 132 loads, so with what we still have we're covered for laundry for probably a year.

Aldi was last. New pallets of flour and sugar were put out not long ago. We found everything else we wanted, although I had to get the 85% cacao chocolate. Staple prices are:

eggs: $1.02 ; milk: $2.78 ; heavy cream: $4.69; OJ: $3.19; butter: $3.19; bacon: $3.99; flour: $2.19; sugar: $3.09; potatoes: $6.29.

A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.899.

Over the weekend, I got y'alls attention with a post about bookkeeping software. And I FIRED QuickBooks Online. Based on your response, I think it is time to have a discussion about the struggles of a creative addressing things in business that are outside our areas of talent and priority. I will share the things I must make myself do and how I handle it. Just because I am not inclined toward a thing does not mean I should ignore it.

Weekly Shopping Report: 8/26/2023

Dollar Tree: One drink cooler is still out of order, but the others are mostly full. There isn't much Venom left, so I hope they get more, although they do have the brewed tea now. Other stock looks good too, and the store was busy enough that a second line was opened.

Although we skipped Home Depot, I checked online for the price of a 2x4x8, and it remains at $3.68.

Aldi was last. We found most of what we wanted except cherries and dark chocolate; they had other varieties which I skipped. They did have heavy cream back in stock. Staple prices were: milk: $2.78; eggs: $1.06; heavy cream: $4.69; OJ: $3.19; butter: $3.19; bacon: $3.99; sugar: $3.09, and flour: $2.19. I may need to add potatoes; Sonia said this is the first time they were over $6, and they had been under $5 or even under $4.

Untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.899 / gallon. A side effect of having a rental car while ours was in the shop is that I got to discover that the usual corrupted stuff (with ethanol) is $3.399 / gallon.

Frugality Tip from Janet

Save 8-1/2 x 11” sheets of paper (printer mis-prints, etc.) and when you have a large stack of paper, take it to a copy shop and have them turn it into small notepads for you.

Operation Independence

  • Today’s show is all about WHY a creative would invest hours of time in tracking finances and doing other annoying clerical things. It is all about optimizing tax deductions to keep more money in my pocket as well as increasing efficiency in my enterprises so that we are increasingly stable.

Main topic of the Show: Creatives' Struggles in Business

I struck a chord over the weekend with a post about Quickbooks Online and bookkeeping: I fired QBO. I got more engagement on that post than most over the past few months. People reached out with advice and suggestions. People also reached out saying the want to follow my progress because they have the same problem.

And what is the problem? I am a creative. I think big picture first, then details. If I was going to be screened, I would probably be diagnosed with ADHD and my chosen lifestyle aplifies those characteristics. In fact, they REALLY wanted to diagnose me in the third grade and Mom would not let them. Thank you MAMA SAUCE.

Creative Challenges in Business

  • I know that tracking details gives critical feedback, but I hates it
  • Bookkeeping and tax codes are freaking complex - unnecessarily so - and this impacts tracking systems leading to frustrations
  • The bookkeeping and finance industry has no motivation to make this easy for us
  • High Pressure of doing it wrong: Fines, audits, and jail time OH MY!
  • The challenge of FINISH

Characteristics of creatives:

  1. We thrive when making something - and suffer when tracking things, unless it supports making something
  2. Prone to starting multiple things at one time
  3. Either shift focus often or can only concentrate on one thing (The coming presentation problem)
  4. Prefer operation outside the box, dont really care about rules or procedure

That being said, I know the power of having things tied up, prepared well in advance, finished and tracked from a feedback standpoint. The beauty of being in business is that the money stops when you are not meeting the needs of your customers and that is a pretty instant feedback.

Addressing Creative Challenges in Business

  • I know that tracking details gives critical feedback, but I hates it (Mindset)
  • Bookkeeping and tax codes are freaking complex - unnecessarily so - and this impacts tracking systems leading to frustrations (What I have tried, shortcuts, outsourcing)
  • The bookkeeping and finance industry has no motivation to make this easy for us (Work in advance to simplify your corporate structure)
  • High Pressure of doing it wrong: Fines, audits, and jail time OH MY! (You found your why - don’t let it paralyze you)
  • The challenge of FINISH (#My3Things)

Summary:

  1. Outsource or Hire to your Weakness
  2. Change your perspective: Investing time in tracking is an important tool toward future success and being able to create more
  3. #my3things

So my creative listeners - what do you do to handle your creative challenges in business?

Make it a great week!

Weekly Shopping Report. 8/7/23

Our first trip on Saturday started with Dollar Tree as usual. The cooler with the Venom I like has been dead long enough that the drinks there are now room temperature. Oh well, I'm not interested in Coke or Pepsi products for caffeine.

Next we went to Hobby Lobby so Sonia could pick up some art supplies. We had not been there in a while, but I didn't notice any significant changes. The parking lot was mostly full as usual, and Sonia found what she wanted.

We skipped Home Depot today (I figured I'd check online for the 2x4x8 price), so the next and last stop was Aldi. The pad I was keeping in the car to record prices is still in the car; we've got a rental due to the car dying. I looked at the same things, and don't recall any significant changes. I'll grab another pad for next week.

Back home, we realized we forgot the fruit. We also discovered that some ladder supports we had ordered were eunuchs (both missing their nuts), and Sonia also decided she wanted some more of a particular product she bought at Hobby Lobby. Hobby Lobby isn't open on Sunday, so we took our second trip today. Hobby Lobby was just as busy, and Sonia got what she wanted.

The second stop of the weekend at Home Depot also allowed me to check the price of a 2x4x8. It is back up to $3.25 after being just $2.98 last week. That's still lower than it has been; they're probably still adjusting.

Aldi had the cherries, bananas, and cantaloupe we had forgotten.

A gallon of untainted regular remains at $3.899, but I suspect it is wishful thinking to believe it will stay there.

Weekly Shopping Report, 7/25/23

I can't find the page where I wrote down prices, in any pocket. Fortunately, I don't think anything in Aldi changed.

Our first stop was the recycle center.

We skipped Dollar Tree this week, since I had bought an extra energy drink for my trip, and we didn't need anything else there.

I ran into Home Depot to check the price of a 2x4x8, and it has indeed dropped quite a bit, to $2.98. It has been months if not years since they were under $3.00.

Aldi was last. Looking at last week's staple prices, I don't think anything changed. I did notice definite gaps in the meat coolers. I won't decide anything about that until this weekend though, since we don't normally shop on Tuesdays and this could be when they might have a lull. They also had none of the 70% chocolate I like, but the price tag at its spot had not changed, so I'll just look again this weekend.

A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.899.

Frugality Tip

Hey all. Today's frugality tip is a gardening hack. What I use to tie my plants to stakes and trellis is t-shirt yarn. It moves with the plants and prevents you from tying too tight and ruining your plant babies.

Take an old Tshirt, lay it flat, and cut strips. I cut off any bottom folded over seam on the shirt and discard. Then cut all the way across the shirt. Take that strip and cut into pieces 3-4" inches long. Then pull those pieces in both directions and they will spring into stretchy "yarn" like ties.

Double hack, cut a couple of strips off the bottom, then cut the sleeves and neck line off (can use the sleeves to make ties as well) then sew across the bottom of the shirt and you have a stretchy bag you can use for harvesting your veggies, or shopping.

Main topic of the Show: Life After #75Hard

What are you going to do to keep your gains after #75hard? What’s next? How is it going now that you are not on #75hard?

All these questions have been pouring in since I finished my 75Hard challenge and I have stayed pretty quiet about it because I just wasn’t sure. I can tell you that my final ten days were the hardest. My body was struggling with the exercise and I had to push through. My morning motivation was crap. I was doing that thing I do when I have done “most” of a thing and do not feel like finishing.

Which brings me to the lessons learned part of this.

Lesson one: finish

Lesson two: decide

Lesson three: plan

Lesson four: prioritize yourself – and just prioritize the important

Lesson five: no

Lesson six: early starts

Lesson seven: You are the story you tell yourself - i finally dropped below my “stuck weight”

Lesson eight: making old age easier & knowing what you can do

Lesson nine: physical health improves mental health

Lesson ten: our food system is jacked up

So really. What does life look like after #75hard

John willis asked me that and I said I am basically still doing it, just not the water part. He was surprised that was the thing that wrinkles. The delio is sometimes I do not need a gallon, sometimes I need less, sometimes more. Listening to my body seems more important.

  1. Building swimming/workouts/dog walks/pilated/fitness as top priority
  2. Eating clean
  3. Keeping the deadline discipline
  4. No
  5. Looking at doing 75hard type things on a schedule
  6. Lose another 10-15
  7. Challening myself to swim faster
  8. Working with SHTF Fitness on making more strength and function gains
  9. Marketing consistency, business development, and a big transition at Holler Roast

Weekly Shopping Report from Joe 05/28/2023

We only made two stops this weekend, skipping Home Depot. Not to worry, the online price of a 2x4x8 is still $3.35. The tag's been missing anyway the last few weeks so I've had to look it up anyway. While I need to re-organize some tools, I don't need to buy any more!

Dollar Tree was the usual first stop. We almost always find some small useful things there. The food coolers in the back are well-stocked. Some of the selections have changed in the drink coolers, but they're also pretty full now. We were behind someone in line who bought a lot of groceries, so that's certainly still possible. Some things will be cheaper elsewhere, so be careful of that, especially on cans of veggies.

Aldi was our final stop. Eggs have continued to drop, now at $1.62/dozen. Since I have read of impending shortages of coffee, Sonia grabbed an extra jar of both normal and joyless coffee (she'll drink one or the other, depending on time of day; now that the weather is warm, I have not been drinking coffee). We found everything else we wanted, including canned cat food.

A gallon of untainted regular gasoline remains at $3.999/gallon. The stuff corrupted by ethanol is considerably cheaper.

Frugality Tip from Margo

Here's a little tip on your journey to self reliance. Figure out how to make things that you want.  At the LFTN Workshop I saw a really cool leather holder for a multi tool, pen, and flashlight. So he took it off and I traced it on a piece of paper to get a general idea of size. While I don't have a "pattern" done yet, I made one. It's pretty darn cool, if I do say so myself. Also I didn't have large pieces of leather laying around, but I did have an old purse I haven't used in a year or so, so I cut that up and repurposed it. So this cost me a conversation with a man that had something I really liked, and some time. You can do whatever you put your mind to, you just have to try. And sometimes (as in this case) try again. This was my third attempt. So go make something!

Main topic of the Show: Train to Your Weakness

You know how they say hire to your weakness? That is great advice, but it does not cover when you should address a weakness you have through learning to be stronger in that area.

  • Hard75 gives me time for deep thinking and self reflection - avoidant behavior regarding self defense
  • Story of what mentally stood in my way of taking Fighting Pistol or really any training class
  • The MOMENT
  • The amplification effect
  • Lessons learned at fighting pistol
    • It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be - sort of like unloading the dishwasher takes 90 seconds, but you can spend all day not doing it because you do not have time
    • True to Tactical Response’s MO, it tore down mental barriers that I had
    • Key to success was coming in with a novice’s heart and mind

So here are some thoughts on the when and why of training to your weaknesses.

Understanding Your Weaknesses and Strengths

  • Defining weaknesses: Exploring areas where you lack proficiency or experience, and acknowledging their impact on your goals and performance.
  • Recognizing strengths: Identifying the areas where you excel, have passion, and find yourself naturally inclined to succeed.
  • Establishing your growth mindset: Understanding that weaknesses can be improved upon and strengths can be leveraged for growth.

Why Train to Improve Weaknesses

  • What is my potential?
  • What will it take to improve, and what am I trading off?
  • What happens if I don’t train
  • To run, you must first walk

The Art of Outsourcing Weaknesses

  • Benefits of outsourcing - dont do things you hate
  • Leveraging strengths to go further - and being there for your loved ones (Drywall example)

Find Balance

  • Self-reflection and introspection: (Your passion, your skillset, your goals)
  • Re-evaluation on a schedule

Conclusion:

  • Personal growth is a dynamic process that requires balance between training to improve weaknesses and outsourcing them when that is a better fit.
  • When you choose to grow, you sometimes choose the hard way - but as my friend Kevaan Kjar likes to day, “Do hard things now so you don;t have to do harder things later.”

Stay tuned for future episodes where we'll continue to explore topics aimed at helping you cultivate a growth mindset and unlock your full potential.

Frugality Tip from Margo

Different stores have different prices and I make a separate grocery list for a couple of stores. Things like eggs, produce, and baking supplies all come from Aldi. If I'm running into the grocery store that is closer to home, I also make it a point to check out their BOGO section, you can save a few bucks right there.  Make a list of the things you buy often and check the prices at different stores, you would be shocked at some of the differences.

I use a specific coffee creamer that they have the grocery store, but Walmart has it for $1.50 less, so I'll grab a couple when I'm there.

Operation Independence

  • Selling a ram alive vs in packages
  • Headed to Next-steps.info – you can still get tickets!

Main topic of the Show: Imposter’s Complex

This was inspired by a talk with Amy Dingmann over at a Farmish Kind of LIfe

I have been reading a book called Dotcom Secrets by Russle Brunson -it was recommended by John Bush

  • John’s selling and email system vs what we do here
  • Keeping an open mind

People getting mad about me making money, or not wanting to know when things are for sale.

Decision: The few who are mad at me for selling things don’t really support me so I need to be ok with leaving them behind

  • Current email list will have no changes
  • News lists will happen over time

>>>What has happened with training webinars over the past two years - we do them better and why<<<

The Big Decision: If I invest more in training, there are better results for the people I want to help  - a win/win

Which brings me to imposter’s complex: Did a live Radio Show Last night and the feedback was that Tim and I were inspiring.

We had no idea what we were doing!

Enter Imposter’s Complex.

Concept: you just need to be a chapter or two ahead of the people you are helping to be able to teach them and do NOT need to be an “expert”. To them you are an expert. In fact you probably teach it bette than someone who is miles ahead.

Ways I have used this:

  • Going on autopilot - and getting out of it
  • Writing Marketing Copy – fake it til you make it
  • Launching the podcast
  • Being “OK” with losing listeners because I sell things, have sponsors, etc (It hurts but wont in the long run)
  • Reminding myself to be disciplined with #my3things (Free webinar)

When you get up and post something like: Going for a daily walk can change your life, and you realize you only went on three last week, are you an imposter? Or are in the fake it til you make it time?

Feeling Imposter’s complex is normal. Not moving forward because of it though, that is a huge mistake/

Make it a great week!
